Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication assists in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes by complementing dietary and exercise regimens. It can be used alone, and when oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin do not effectively control blood sugar, using this medication in combination can allow for more effective blood sugar management. Particularly, in cases where sufficient control is not achieved with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, using this medication alongside metformin can enhance blood sugar improvement. Overall, this medication helps improve blood sugar control and manage diabetes more effectively.
1. Monotherapy - Initial dose: Start with 1 mg of glimepiride, taken once daily. - Dose increase: Can increase by 1 mg at 1 to 2-week intervals. - Maximum dose: Generally, no additional effects beyond 4 mg; some patients may increase up to 6 mg or 8 mg. - If 4 mg daily is ineffective, consider insulin therapy or combination with other oral diabetes medications. 2. Combination therapy - Used in conjunction with insulin.
This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or in a state of coma. Additionally, it is unsafe for individuals who have had allergic reactions to this medication or sulfonylureas. Patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function should not use this medication without prior experience with it, and transitioning to insulin therapy is recommended. Pregnant women, those who may become pregnant, or breastfeeding women should not take this medication. Insulin therapy is required in cases of severe infections or before and after surgery, trauma, and this medication should be avoided. In cases of gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting, there is a risk of hypoglycemia due to inadequate nutrient absorption, so caution is required. During the first week of taking this medication, there is a heightened risk of hypoglycemia, and blood sugar levels should be carefully monitored. In particular, elderly persons, those with poor nutritional status, irregular eating patterns, or who do not balance exercise and carbohydrate intake may face increased risks of hypoglycemia. Individuals who consume alcohol frequently or have kidney or liver function issues, or who overdose on this medication, may also experience hypoglycemia, necessitating caution. Those with endocrine disorders such as thyroid dysfunction, pituitary dysfunction, or adrenal insufficiency are also at increased risk for hypoglycemia; careful monitoring of blood sugar is essential. While taking this medication, symptoms of hypoglycemia such as headaches, severe hunger, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, blurred vision, sweating, and anxiety may occur, and immediate intake of sugar is required upon experiencing these symptoms. Temporary blurriness in vision may occur, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may rarely present themselves. Serious side effects such as liver dysfunction or decreased blood cell count can occur rarely, so any unusual symptoms should be immediately discussed with a doctor. Allergic reactions leading to skin rash, hives, or difficulty breathing may occur; immediate treatment is necessary if such symptoms arise. In order to control blood sugar effectively, it is crucial to manage diet, exercise, and weight alongside taking this medication, and adherence to a regular dosing schedule is necessary. If hypoglycemia occurs, quickly consuming sugar or sweetened drinks can mitigate symptoms; thus, it is advisable to always keep some sugar handy. If taking other medications or starting new ones, it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist of potential interactions with this medication. In particular, caution should be taken when used in conjunction with beta blockers, certain antibiotics, and steroids, as they may cause significant fluctuations in blood sugar levels. For those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, insulin therapy is recommended instead of this medication to avoid harming the fetus or newborn. It is advisable not to use this medication in children under 18 years of age as its safety and efficacy have not been established. For elderly patients, dosage adjustment may be necessary due to decreased kidney function, and particular attention should be paid to the risk of hypoglycemia. If this medication is overdosed, severe hypoglycemia may occur, necessitating immediate emergency treatment, and blood sugar should be monitored continuously following a doctor's instructions.
