Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. For example, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adult patients with risk factors for coronary heart disease, and it also reduces the risk of vascular interventions and chronic stable angina. In particular, it helps to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes. In patients with clinical evidence, it is effective in reducing the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, fatal and non-fatal stroke, vascular interventions, and congestive heart failure hospitalizations. Additionally, it acts as an adjunct to diet in patients with hyperlipidemia by decreasing total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, and increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is also used to improve blood lipid levels in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, and if greater LDL cholesterol lowering is required, it may be initiated at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered at a dosage range of 10-80 mg once daily. The starting and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and responses, with lipid levels being analyzed within 2-4 weeks after initiating treatment or adjusting doses.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10-17), the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg per day. The dosage should be adjusted appropriately according to treatment goals, at 4-week intervals.
