This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. For example, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adult patients with risk factors for coronary heart disease, and it also reduces the risk of vascular interventions and chronic stable angina. In particular, it helps to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes. In patients with clinical evidence, it is effective in reducing the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, fatal and non-fatal stroke, vascular interventions, and congestive heart failure hospitalizations. Additionally, it acts as an adjunct to diet in patients with hyperlipidemia by decreasing total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, and increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is also used to improve blood lipid levels in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
