This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Specifically, it helps lower the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary artery disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, hospitalization for congestive heart failure, and angina in patients with established coronary artery disease. This medication is also effective in treating hyperlipidemia and is used to decrease bad cholesterol levels and increase good cholesterol levels in patients with primary and mixed dyslipidemia. It is particularly helpful for certain types of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia that do not respond to dietary changes. Furthermore, it is used as an adjunct for lowering cholesterol levels in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia during growth. Therefore, this medication is widely used for the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk and the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
