Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia, alleviation of dyslipidemia
This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Specifically, it helps lower the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary artery disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, hospitalization for congestive heart failure, and angina in patients with established coronary artery disease. This medication is also effective in treating hyperlipidemia and is used to decrease bad cholesterol levels and increase good cholesterol levels in patients with primary and mixed dyslipidemia. It is particularly helpful for certain types of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia that do not respond to dietary changes. Furthermore, it is used as an adjunct for lowering cholesterol levels in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia during growth. Therefore, this medication is widely used for the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk and the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
The recommended starting dose for the treatment of hyperlipidemia is 10 mg once daily, and for patients requiring greater LDL cholesterol reduction, treatment may begin with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosing range is from 10 mg to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response, with lipid levels analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after treatment initiation to adjust the dose.
The recommended starting dose for pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg once daily. The dose should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or longer based on therapeutic goals.
