Mucolysis and improved expectoration in acute and chronic respiratory diseases
This medication helps to dissolve mucus and expel phlegm in acute and chronic respiratory diseases. When mucus in the airways is sticky, it can cause breathing difficulties; this medicine reduces mucus viscosity, facilitating airway clearance. As a result, breathing becomes easier, and symptoms improve. It is used to enhance respiratory function in patients through mucolytic and expectorant effects in acute and chronic respiratory diseases.
Adults: The usual dose is 300 mg of erdosteine orally 2 to 3 times daily. Do not administer continuously for more than 10 days when treating acute respiratory disease.
This drug should not be used in certain patients. First, individuals allergic to this drug or its components should not take it. Additionally, patients with liver cirrhosis and those with a deficiency of cystathionine synthase should avoid this medication as it may affect methionine metabolism. It is also advisable for individuals with peptic ulcers not to use this drug. Patients with severe renal impairment, particularly those with a creatinine clearance of less than 25 mL/min, should not take this medication. Patients with severe hepatic impairment should also avoid this drug. Patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment should use this medication cautiously, ensuring that the daily dosage does not exceed 300 mg. Overdosing on this drug may lead to symptoms such as excessive sweating, dizziness, and facial flushing. Neurological and respiratory symptoms like headaches, cold symptoms, and dyspnea may also occur. Gastrointestinal effects may include taste disturbances, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and heartburn. Skin reactions may manifest as hives, red spots, or eczema. Reports have indicated fatigue, dyspepsia, gastrointestinal disturbances, palpitations, facial or generalized swelling, itching, weakness, drowsiness, and rashes after taking this medication, although a direct correlation with the drug is not confirmed. Taking this medication along with expectorants may increase the risk of bronchial infections due to reduced phlegm expulsion from the cough suppressant effects, and bronchoconstriction may be triggered, thus caution is advised. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, are advised against taking this drug as its safety has not been established. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and it is recommended to store it in its original container to prevent accidents or degradation in quality.
