This medication is used to treat various infections caused by a range of bacteria. Specifically, it is effective for complicated skin and soft tissue infections, secondary infections in chronic bronchitis or chronic respiratory diseases, community-acquired pneumonia, and bronchiectasis in the presence of an infection. It is also used for treating urinary tract infections such as acute pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis, gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis, and epididymitis. Additionally, it is applicable for various infections including bacterial dysentery, enteritis, pelvic infections, uterine infections, periorbital inflammation, otitis media, sinusitis, periodontal tissue inflammation, jaw inflammation, cholecystitis, and cholangitis. However, fluorquinolone class drugs are used sparingly due to the risk of side effects when no alternative treatments are available. This medication is utilized to improve symptoms and aid in health recovery for these diverse bacterial infections.

For adults, levofloxacin is taken orally at a dose of 100 mg once, 2 to 3 times a day. For severe cases or when effectiveness is inadequate, the dose is increased to 200 mg once, 3 times a day. Adjustments may be made based on age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and may lead to serious side effects such as tendinitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system adverse symptoms. It should not be administered to patients with myasthenia gravis due to the risk of worsening symptoms. This medication should only be used cautiously when no other treatment options are available for specific bacterial infections. Special caution is needed for the elderly, patients with impaired renal function, and those taking corticosteroids due to a higher risk of tendon rupture. Additionally, due to the risk of seizures, patients with neurological disorders or a history of seizures must consult a doctor before use. This medication can cause various side effects such as allergic reactions, severe skin symptoms, liver or kidney dysfunction, and blood disorders, so immediate medical consultation is required if symptoms occur. Photosensitivity reactions may occur, so strong sunlight or artificial UV exposure should be avoided. Patients experiencing dizziness or drowsiness should refrain from driving or operating machinery. Pregnant or potentially pregnant women, nursing mothers, and growing children or adolescents should not take this medication. There may be drug interactions, so patients must always inform their healthcare provider about any ongoing medications, and diabetic patients requiring blood sugar control should closely monitor their blood sugar levels. In case of overdose, central nervous system symptoms and cardiac issues can occur, necessitating immediate emergency treatment, as this medication is not removed through hemodialysis. When using this medication, it is important to adhere to the prescribed dosage and duration as instructed by a physician, and to discontinue use and consult with healthcare staff immediately if abnormal symptoms arise.
