Relief of skeletal muscle stiffness (e.g., due to spinal cord diseases, cerebral diseases, and multiple sclerosis)
This medication is effective for skeletal muscle spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis or spinocerebellar degeneration, as well as spastic symptoms resulting from various spinal disorders. It is also used for muscle rigidity caused by central nervous system disorders such as cerebral palsy or stroke. In other words, it helps alleviate muscle spasticity that occurs due to various causes in the central nervous system. By improving this spasticity, it facilitates smoother movement for patients and reduces discomfort in daily life. Thus, this medication is used for the treatment of muscle spasticity caused by neurological disorders.
Treatment with this medication should always be started at a low dose, which is then gradually increased. The optimal dose should be individualized for each patient to reduce clonus, flexor and extensor rigidity, and spasms while avoiding adverse effects as much as possible. To prevent excessive muscle weakness and falls, use with caution when muscle tone is needed to maintain balance while standing and moving and to preserve function. It is important to allow transient spasms that help maintain some muscle tone and support circulatory function. Take this medication with a small amount of water during meals. Adults should take this medication orally in 3 divided doses per day. ○ Adults 1. Administer 5㎎ of baclofen per dose orally, 3 times daily, and increase by 5㎎ per dose, 3 times daily, at 3-day intervals until the optimal dose is determined. 2. For patients who are hypersensitive to this medication, it is advisable to start with a lower dose (5-10㎎ per day) and increase it slowly. 3. The usual optimal dose is 30-80㎎ per day. Hospitalized patients may receive 100-120㎎ per day under close supervision.
○ Children (12 months~18 years) 1. Treatment is generally started at a very low dose (0.3 mg/kg per day in 2~4 divided doses). 2. The usual maintenance dose is 0.75~2mg/kg per day. 3. The maximum daily dose for children under 8 years of age is 40mg. 3. The maximum daily dose for children aged 8 years and older is 60mg. 4. Increase the dose carefully at intervals of approximately 1-2 weeks until it is appropriate for the individual patient's needs. If no clear therapeutic effect is observed within 6-8 weeks after administration of the maximum dose, reconsider whether to continue this medication.
This medication should not be used by patients who are allergic to this drug or its other components. Additionally, as it contains lactose, patients with a genetic problem that impairs lactose digestion should avoid taking this medication. Patients with neurological disorders such as psychosis or epilepsy should use this medication with extreme caution, as their symptoms may worsen, and they should be monitored frequently. Patients with a history of peptic ulcers, heart, cerebrovascular, respiratory, liver, or kidney issues should also take this medication with special care. In particular, patients with severely impaired kidney function should start with a very low dose, and patients undergoing dialysis should be cautious as the drug concentration may increase. This medication can trigger seizures in children, especially those with a history of epilepsy, so caution is warranted. Taking this drug may cause central nervous system side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, and fatigue, which can be alleviated by slowly adjusting the dose. Elderly patients with a history of mental illness or strokes may experience more severe side effects, so caution is advised. Stopping this medication suddenly after long-term use may lead to severe symptoms such as anxiety, hallucinations, and seizures, so it should be gradually tapered down. During treatment with this medication, dizziness or drowsiness may occur, so activities such as driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. Patients with liver problems or diabetes should regularly undergo liver function tests and blood glucose tests while taking this medication. When taken with other drugs that affect the central nervous system or alcohol, the sedative effect may be enhanced, and the risk of respiratory depression increases, requiring special caution. During pregnancy, there may be risks to the fetus, so it should only be taken when absolutely necessary, and similar caution should be exercised during breastfeeding. Elderly patients should start at a low dose due to decreased metabolic function and should be monitored while taking the drug. In the case of an overdose, serious symptoms such as drowsiness, coma, respiratory distress, and seizures may occur, necessitating immediate medical assistance; there is no specific antidote, so treatment will be based on symptoms.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture. It is best to maintain the storage temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will effectively maintain the drug's efficacy and safety.
