Efficacy & effects

Improvement of hepatic encephalopathy due to acute and chronic liver disorders and amino acid supplementation effect

View approved original text

This medication helps improve encephalopathy caused by acute and chronic liver disorders. It also provides amino acids to patients with impaired liver function to support bodily functions. This aids in alleviating symptoms related to liver disorders as well as improving overall nutritional status. It is used to effectively support liver health for patients.

How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 500 to 1000 mL by drip infusion. The rate is based on 180 to 300 minutes per 500 mL (approximately 40 to 50 drops per minute). For central venous administration, mix 500 to 1000 mL with dextrose solutions, and continuously infuse it into the central vein over 24 hours.

Precautions

This medication should only be used according to a doctor's instruction. It should not be used in patients with severe impaired kidney function, high nitrogen levels in the blood, or problems with amino acid metabolism other than liver dysfunction. Caution is also needed for patients who have difficulty utilizing nitrogen due to metabolic disorders, those with severe heart failure, those with pulmonary edema, those with very low or no urine output, those with acidosis, and those with excessive fluid supply in the body. In patients with heart failure or edema, and in those with weak kidney function, it should be administered cautiously. This medication contains sodium bisulfite, which may cause severe allergic reactions in patients allergic to sulfites or with asthma, requiring additional precaution. While using this medication, hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rashes may occur rarely; in such cases, use should be discontinued immediately. Occasionally, gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and vomiting, chest discomfort, palpitations, rapid pulse, and elevated blood pressure may occur. Administering it rapidly in large doses can lead to an acidic blood state, so it is important to administer it slowly. Serious symptoms such as chills, fever, headache, shortness of breath, and shock may also occur, so if there are any unusual symptoms, medical personnel should be informed immediately. Conditions such as metabolic acidosis, hypophosphatemia, alkalosis, elevated blood sugar, worsening diabetes, dehydration, rebound hypoglycemia, elevated liver enzymes, vitamin imbalances, and electrolyte imbalances may occur, therefore regular testing is necessary. In patients with weak kidney function, blood urea nitrogen levels may increase. Serum ammonia levels may vary during the administration of this drug, so monitoring is necessary. Caution should be taken regarding electrolyte balance in large doses, especially when used in conjunction with other medications containing electrolytes. Overdosing can cause metabolic alkalosis, so care should be taken regarding the acetate ions it contains. In patients with kidney disease, lung disease, or heart disease, care should be taken to avoid excessive fluid shifts during administration. Diabetic patients should frequently monitor their blood sugar levels. This medication may be less effective when used with certain antibiotics, so consultation with a doctor is advised. The safety for pregnant women has not been established, thus it should only be administered when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. In children, it may be administered at lower concentrations due to immature liver function, and blood ammonia levels should be frequently monitored. Elderly patients may have decreased bodily functions, so the administration rate should be slow, and dosages should be adjusted accordingly. This medication contains electrolytes, requiring caution regarding electrolyte balance during large doses, and administering it slowly can help reduce side effects such as chills or vomiting. During administration, keep the medication at body temperature and prepare and administer it in a sterile condition to reduce the risk of infection. If the packaged solution is discolored or leaking, do not use it, and it should be stored unopened, using it within 24 hours after opening.
