Treatment for essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to effectively control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It is also indicated for high-risk diabetic patients aged 55 or older who have a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attack, or who show evidence of target organ damage. This medication helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular-related mortality in these patients. It can be administered as an alternative therapy for patients who cannot use ACE inhibitors. Therefore, this medication is effective in reducing hypertension and cardiovascular disease risk.
For the treatment of essential hypertension, take 40 mg of Telmisartan orally once a day with water, regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and the dose may be increased up to 80 mg once daily if necessary. Maximum antihypertensive effects are observed 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. For the purpose of reducing cardiovascular disease risk, 80 mg once daily is recommended.
This medication may cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Patients with severe liver dysfunction or cholestasis are also advised not to use this medication. Patients with hereditary angioedema or a history of angioedema should avoid taking this medication. It is necessary to regularly monitor blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels while taking this medication to check for abnormalities. Blood pressure may drop suddenly, so especially when starting treatment, symptoms should be closely observed, and appropriate actions should be taken if necessary. This medication may cause various adverse reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash, angioedema, myalgia, worsening renal function, or difficulty breathing occur, healthcare providers should be notified immediately. Interactions may occur when combined with other antihypertensives, diuretics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), so consultation with a physician is advised. Caution should be taken when driving or operating hazardous machinery due to the possibility of dizziness or fainting.
