Efficacy & effects

Luteal support during assisted reproductive technology treatment in women with infertility due to progesterone deficiency

View approved original text

Treatment that supplements luteal function is needed for women with infertility due to progesterone deficiency during assisted reproductive technology (ART). This treatment helps to maintain luteal function, supporting the prevention of pregnancy loss. By supplementing progesterone, the endometrium is maintained in a state suitable for pregnancy, potentially increasing the success rate of conception. Therefore, this medication is used to complement the inadequate luteal function in the infertility treatment process.

Precautions

This medication should be closely monitored by a physician for early symptoms of serious vascular diseases such as thromboembolic disorders or myocardial infarction. If such conditions are suspected or occur, use should be discontinued immediately. This medication is sometimes used to prevent miscarriages, but there is insufficient scientific evidence to support this use. This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to any component, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, missed abortions, liver disease, breast cancer, or a history of thromboembolic disorders. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients with porphyria. Various side effects such as abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, headache, fatigue, vaginal bleeding, and uterine cramping may occur; thus, caution is advised. Especially, reproductive-related adverse reactions such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome have been reported. Prior to taking this medication, cervical cancer screening and breast and pelvic examinations must be performed, and regular examinations should be conducted every six months during prolonged use. If irregular vaginal bleeding occurs, the cause must be accurately diagnosed before using this medication. Since it may cause fluid retention, it should be observed cautiously in patients with a history of epilepsy, migraine, asthma, or cardiac or renal disease. Patients with a history of depression should closely monitor any worsening symptoms; if symptoms worsen, medication should be discontinued. Diabetic patients should exercise caution, as blood sugar control may be affected. It is advisable not to use this medication in conjunction with other intravaginal treatments; if used together, there should be a minimum interval of 6 hours between them. During use, if symptoms such as leg pain, sudden shortness of breath, vision loss, severe headache, chest pain, or jaundice of the skin or eyes occur, consult a physician immediately. Caution is required when driving or operating machinery due to the possibility of drowsiness. This medication may interact with drugs metabolized in the liver; therefore, inform your physician or pharmacist of any other medications being taken. It can be used for the treatment of luteal deficiency in early pregnancy, but due to the potential risk of fetal abnormalities, strict adherence to physician instructions is necessary during pregnancy. It is preferable to avoid this medication during breastfeeding, as it may be excreted in small amounts in breast milk. The safety and efficacy in children or elderly patients over 65 years have not been fully confirmed, thus caution should be exercised in their use. In case of overdose, discontinue use immediately and receive appropriate treatment based on symptoms.
