Precautions

This medication is used in diabetes treatment with both components acting together to control blood sugar. When taking this medication, there is a risk of a rare side effect called severe lactic acidosis; if symptoms appear, consult a physician immediately. Additionally, caution is needed as there is a risk of hypoglycemia when taken with insulin or other diabetes medications. This medication should not be taken by patients with severely reduced kidney function or certain acute diseases. Before and after examinations that use iodine contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued and restarted only after confirming normal kidney function. In cases where surgery is scheduled, this medication should be stopped for a period before the procedure, but can be resumed after recovery. Patients with liver dysfunction, severe infections, dehydration, or poor nutritional status should use this medication with caution. Adverse effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, infections, hypoglycemia, increased urination, abnormal liver function, and genitourinary infections may occur; these symptoms should be reported to a physician. Particularly, women need to pay attention to hygiene as genital infections may occur more frequently. It is advisable to regularly check kidney function and serum vitamin B12 levels when on this medication. Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of adverse effects, so it should be avoided. This medication may interact with other drugs, so if other medications are being taken, please inform a physician or pharmacist. Elderly patients may have decreased kidney function, so dosage adjustments and regular monitoring are necessary.
