Precautions

This medication is used to treat diabetes and helps lower blood sugar. However, it may rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. When used with other diabetes medications, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, so care should be taken. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute kidney problems, heart failure, severe infections, or those scheduled for surgery should not use this medication. In addition, pregnant women and individuals with certain genetic disorders should not be administered this drug. During treatment with this medication, regular kidney function tests are advised, and patients should consult their physician immediately if conditions such as dehydration, severe vomiting, or diarrhea occur. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may appear, and dosage adjustments may be necessary when used in conjunction with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents. Urinary or genital infections may occur; thus, prompt treatment should be sought if symptoms of infection arise. Caution should be exercised when using this medication in patients with liver dysfunction, and it is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption. Prior to surgery or examinations using iodinated contrast agents, temporarily discontinue this medication, and ensure normal kidney function afterwards. It is safest not to use this drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Elderly patients or those with poor nutritional status should use this medication with particular caution, and in case of overdose, immediate treatment at a hospital is required. This medication should be swallowed whole without crushing, chewing, or splitting; the tablet shell may appear in the stool, which is normal.
