View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes who are appropriate for the combination of empagliflozin and metformin. Special care is needed for patients with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled and who have cardiovascular disease, as they are at increased risk of cardiovascular events. Therefore, this medication serves as a treatment that helps manage blood sugar while also supporting cardiovascular health.

How to take

Adult dose

The 10/1000 mg or 25/1000 mg extended-release tablet of this medication is taken once daily, 1 tablet at dinner with meals. The dose of metformin hydrochloride should be increased gradually, and to maintain its extended-release characteristics, the tablet should not be split, crushed, ground, or chewed, but swallowed whole. The initial recommended dose is 10 mg of empagliflozin along with the patient's current dose of metformin, and if well tolerated, empagliflozin can be increased.

Precautions

This medication is used to treat type 2 diabetes and helps lower blood sugar levels. However, it can rarely cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis, so caution is warranted. Additionally, hypoglycemia may occur when used in conjunction with insulin or other diabetes medications. This medication should not be used in patients with significantly impaired kidney function or acute kidney problems. Patients with unstable cardiac function or acute heart failure should also refrain from using this medication. It is important to temporarily discontinue this medication before and after tests that use iodine-based contrast agents, and to resume only after confirming normal kidney function. Pregnant women or those with placental function issues should avoid using this medication. This medication can lead to fluid volume loss, so it should be used with caution in cases of dehydration, severe diarrhea, or vomiting. Patients with liver impairment should also avoid this medication, and excessive alcohol consumption is risky. Regular monitoring of kidney function and serum vitamin B12 levels is recommended during treatment. This medication may increase the risk of genital infections and urinary tract infections, so if any related symptoms arise, medical consultation should be sought immediately. Furthermore, hypoglycemic symptoms can occur, so caution should be exercised, especially after skipping meals or following exercise. This medication should be discontinued at least 48 hours prior to surgery, and resumed only after kidney function has recovered post-surgery. This medication should be swallowed whole without crushing, chewing, or breaking, and it is normal for the tablet shell to be excreted. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function may require dose adjustments and regular monitoring. In case of overdose, there is a risk of lactic acidosis, and prompt medical treatment should be sought. It is important to avoid acute or chronic alcohol consumption during treatment. Lastly, keep this medication out of reach of children and store it in its original container.
