View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is particularly effective for patients whose blood sugar levels are not adequately controlled and should be used with caution in cases of cardiovascular disease. This helps with blood sugar management and reduces the risk of complications associated with diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

The dosage of this medication should be determined within the limits of 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of extended-release metformin hydrochloride, considering each patient's current treatment, efficacy, and tolerability. This medication should be taken once daily in the evening with food, and should be swallowed whole without being split, crushed, ground, or chewed. The extended-release tablets 25/1000 mg should be taken once daily at a dose of one tablet.

Precautions

This medication helps to control blood sugar levels. However, there are several precautions to consider while taking this medication. First, it can rarely cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis can lead to a dangerous accumulation of lactic acid in the body, so if symptoms such as sudden muscle pain, shortness of breath, weakness, or abdominal pain occur, consult a doctor immediately. Second, when taking this medication with insulin or other diabetes medications, caution is required as it may cause hypoglycemia, meaning blood sugar levels drop too low. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include dizziness, headache, cold sweats, and severe fatigue, and immediate action should be taken if these symptoms occur. Third, patients with poor kidney function should not take this medication. Decreased kidney function may cause the drug to accumulate in the body and worsen side effects. Regular kidney function tests should be performed before and during treatment. Fourth, during times of dehydration, severe infection, acute heart issues, or before and after surgery when the body's condition deteriorates rapidly, the use of this medication should be temporarily halted and resumed only after recovery. Fifth, this medication must be discontinued before and after imaging tests using iodinated contrast agents, and resuming should occur only after confirming normal kidney function after the test. Sixth, this medication may increase the risk of genital infections and urinary tract infections; therefore, prompt treatment is necessary if infection symptoms appear. Seventh, this medication can decrease vitamin B12 levels, so patients taking it for a long time should periodically check their vitamin B12 levels. Eighth, it is safest for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant to avoid taking this medication, and it is also recommended to avoid use while breastfeeding. Ninth, elderly or frail patients should take caution as the risk of side effects such as dehydration or hypotension is higher when taking this medication. Finally, this medication should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. It is normal for the outer coating of the tablet to appear in the stool. During the treatment with this medication, it is important to adhere to the above precautions and consult medical personnel immediately if any abnormal symptoms arise.
