This medication helps to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It is also used to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality in patients over 55 years of age who have a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, or high-risk diabetes. It is particularly effective in patients who cannot take ACE inhibitors. This medication plays an important role in overall risk reduction for cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, it can be used as a medication that aids in blood pressure management and improvement of cardiovascular health.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, 40 mg of Telmisartan should be taken orally once a day with water, regardless of meals. For some patients, 20 mg once a day may be effective. If necessary, the dose can be increased to 80 mg once a day, and the maximal blood pressure-lowering effect usually occurs within 4 to 8 weeks after dose escalation. Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, so if pregnancy is confirmed, it should be discontinued immediately. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Patients with severe liver impairment, biliary obstruction, or cholestasis should not take this medication. Patients with allergic reactions or a history of hereditary angioedema should also avoid using this medication. In diabetic patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, it is prohibited to take this medication alongside certain other medications. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, and patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction should use this medication cautiously and may require dose adjustments. Caution is also necessary for patients with heart valve disease or ischemic heart disease. This drug has a blood-lowering effect, and excessive blood pressure reduction could lead to risks of myocardial infarction or stroke. Patients with weak kidney function or renal artery stenosis should also use this medication cautiously, as there is a risk of worsening renal function, and monitoring is needed. This medication may increase the blood pressure-lowering effect when taken with other antihypertensive medications. Regular monitoring of potassium levels is necessary due to the potential for hyperkalemia. Special caution is required when used with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements, as potassium levels can become dangerously high. This medication can lead to serious side effects such as liver dysfunction, jaundice, angioedema, renal failure, shock, syncope; if symptoms occur, it should be discontinued immediately and medical attention sought. Caution is needed while driving or operating machinery as there is a possibility of dizziness or fainting. This medication contains sorbitol and is not suitable for patients with fructose intolerance. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and nursing mothers are also advised to avoid it. This medication is not recommended for children under 18 years of age as safety and efficacy have not been established. Overdose may result in hypotension, dizziness, acute renal failure; immediate medical treatment should be sought. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring to another container can jeopardize quality.
