Improvement of lack of motivation and treatment of dementia syndrome; relief of atherosclerotic headache; adjunctive treatment of hypertension
This medication helps improve decreased motivation due to chronic cerebral circulation disorders resulting from cerebral infarction. It is also used for alleviating atherosclerotic headaches in elderly patients and as an adjunct treatment for hypertension. The 30 mg dosage is primarily used to improve memory impairment, concentration disorders, diminished judgment, lack of initiative, and similar symptoms associated with primary degenerative vascular dementia and mixed dementia. In summary, this medication is effectively used for treating sequelae of cerebrovascular diseases, senile headaches, hypertension, and dementia syndromes.
* 5 mg, 10 mg Adults: Administer nicergoline 5 ∼ 10 mg orally per dose, 3 times daily before meals. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to symptoms. * 30 mg Adults: Administer nicergoline 30 mg orally once daily before a meal. If the desired effect is not achieved at this dose, the dose may be increased to 60 mg. The dose may be reduced after symptoms improve. Reduce the dose in patients with impaired renal function (serum creatinine >175 µmol/L) (2 mg/dL).
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, individuals with allergic reactions to this medication or ergot alkaloids should not take it. Patients with acute myocardial infarction who have sustained acute damage to the heart should also avoid this medication. Additionally, patients with severe bleeding or those taking sympathomimetic drugs should refrain from using it. Bradycardia patients (heart rate below 50 beats per minute) or patients who have not completed hemostasis after a cerebral hemorrhage should not use this medication. Patients having issues with blood pressure control, such as orthostatic hypotension, should not be administered this medication. Caution should be exercised in patients with mild bradycardia or renal function problems. This medication may rarely cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as dyspepsia, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and dry mouth. Liver function test values may temporarily rise, hence caution is required. Symptoms such as dizziness, blood pressure fluctuations, fatigue, drowsiness, headaches, and insomnia may occur, so any abnormal symptoms should be reported. Allergic reactions such as rashes, itching, and hives may arise, so keep an eye out for skin changes. Blood pressure should be monitored frequently while taking this medication, as combining it with other antihypertensive medications may lead to excessively low blood pressure. Since this medication can affect uric acid levels, those with gout or hyperuricemia need to exercise caution. After taking it, careful driving or operating machinery is advised. This medication is metabolized in the liver by specific enzymes (CYP450 2D6), therefore interactions with other drugs related to this enzyme may occur. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits of using this medication, notably as harmful effects on the fetus have been reported in animal studies. During breastfeeding, as this medication may be excreted in breast milk, it is advisable to avoid its use or to discontinue breastfeeding if possible. Elderly patients, due to potentially decreased bodily function, should receive careful dosage adjustments. It is not recommended for children, as its safety has not been established. In case of overdose, blood pressure may temporarily drop, so immediate consultation with medical personnel is required if any abnormal symptoms appear. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration of quality.
