This medication is used to improve cognitive function and alleviate symptoms in patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered orally once a day and must be given at the same time each day. If necessary, it may be administered twice a day. Dose increase is up to a maximum daily dosage of 20 mg, and the dosage should be increased by 5 mg weekly for the first 3 weeks. During the first week (days 1-7), 5 mg is given per day, during the second week (days 8-14), 10 mg per day, during the third week (days 15-21), 15 mg per day, and from the fourth week onwards, 20 mg per day should be administered.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to any component of this drug, those with severe liver impairment, or those with significant renal impairment. It should be used cautiously in patients with epilepsy or those who have a history of seizures, or in conditions where seizures may easily occur. Additionally, concomitant use with NMDA receptor antagonists such as amantadine, ketamine, or dextromethorphan may increase central nervous system side effects, so it is advisable not to use them together. Care should be taken when using this medication in situations where urine acidity is elevated or in patients drinking large amounts of alkaline beverages, and those with specific urinary tract infections should be closely monitored. Safety data is insufficient for patients with heart disease or uncontrolled hypertension, so careful administration is required. While taking this medication, side effects such as dizziness, headache, constipation, drowsiness, and hypertension may occur; if symptoms are severe, consult a healthcare professional. There may be interactions with other medications, so caution is advised when taken with levodopa, dopamine agonists, anticholinergics, barbiturates, antipsychotics, and skeletal muscle relaxants. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should only use this drug when the benefits outweigh the risks, as it may affect the fetus. If breastfeeding, it is recommended to discontinue nursing as this medication may be transmitted through breast milk. The safety and efficacy of this drug have not been established in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. In case of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, hallucinations, seizures, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur, and immediate medical attention is required. This medication may impair reaction speed and concentration, so special attention should be paid when driving or operating machinery. Finally, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and transferring it to another container should be avoided as it may negatively affect quality.
