Treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease
This medication is used in the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disorder characterized by gradual decline in memory and cognitive function, and this medication helps to slow the progression of symptoms and improve the daily living abilities of patients. Therefore, it can contribute to enhancing the quality of life for patients.
This medication is taken orally once daily, and it should be taken at the same time each day. If necessary, it can be administered twice daily. The adult dosage increase method is up to a maximum daily dose of 20 mg, increasing by 5 mg per week for the first 3 weeks. In the first week (days 1-7), 5 mg once daily should be administered for 7 days. In the second week (days 8-14), 10 mg once daily for 7 days. In the third week (days 15-21), 15 mg once daily for 7 days. From the fourth week onward, 20 mg should be taken daily.
This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to any of its components or have very poor liver function, as well as in patients with severely impaired kidney function. Caution is required when using this medication in patients with epilepsy or a history of seizures, or patients with a predisposition to seizures. Particularly, co-administration with NMDA receptor antagonists such as amantadine, ketamine, and dextromethorphan may increase central nervous system side effects, and should be avoided. Patients with changes in urine acidity (pH) due to dietary habits or certain diseases should closely monitor their urine status. Patients with heart disease or uncontrolled hypertension should exercise caution when using this medication, and those with an allergy to the dye Yellow No. 5 should also be careful. During the use of this medication, symptoms such as dizziness, headache, constipation, drowsiness, and hypertension may occur, and if symptoms are severe or uncomfortable, medical consultation is recommended. There may be interactions with other medications, so it is essential to inform healthcare professionals if taking NMDA antagonists, antipsychotic drugs, muscle relaxants, certain anticoagulants, and gastrointestinal medications. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this medication with caution, and it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding if nursing. This medication should not be used in children or adolescents under 18, as its safety and efficacy in this population have not been confirmed. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention for proper treatment, as there is no specific antidote and treatment should be symptomatic. This medication may affect the central nervous system, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Finally, this medication should be kept out of reach of children, and care should be taken to avoid transferring it to other containers as it may alter the quality.
