This medication is used to relieve symptoms caused by chronic idiopathic urticaria, a type of allergic skin condition. Chronic idiopathic urticaria includes the appearance of hives that occur repeatedly on the skin, and this medication helps to reduce itching and inflammation, improving the patient's discomfort. Therefore, this medication is effective in relieving symptoms of allergic skin conditions.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older should take 180 mg of fexofenadine hydrochloride orally once daily before meals with water. Patients with renal failure should take 60 mg orally once daily before meals as a starting dose.

Child dose

Children under 12 years of age should not take this medication as its safety and efficacy have not been established.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this drug or any of its ingredients. It is also not safe to administer to patients with impaired renal function due to renal failure. Caution should be exercised when administering to elderly patients or those with heart disease or a history of heart disease. During treatment, side effects such as headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, upper respiratory tract infections, and low back pain may occur. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions such as fatigue, insomnia, irritability, sleep disturbances, nightmares, dry mouth, rash, hives, itching, angioedema, dyspnea, and skin flushing may occur. If severe hypersensitivity reactions or shock symptoms occur, discontinue the medication immediately and seek appropriate treatment. Liver function tests should be conducted regularly as there may be abnormalities in liver function, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, consult a physician. Although it does not significantly impact driving or machine operation, those sensitive to medications should exercise caution after taking it. There are few interactions with other drugs, but caution is warranted when taken with some antifungal agents or antibiotics as it can increase the blood concentration of this medication. When taken with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium hydroxide, absorption of this drug may be reduced, so it is advisable to take them 2 hours apart. Taking with grapefruit juice, orange juice, or apple juice may decrease the effectiveness of this medication, so it is recommended to take it with water. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits to the fetus when taking this medication. It is safest for nursing mothers to avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication, as it may be excreted in breast milk. Safety and efficacy in children under 12 years of age and in neonates have not been adequately established. Elderly patients may have reduced renal function, necessitating dosage adjustment and monitoring of renal function. It is recommended to discontinue this medication 3 to 5 days prior to allergy testing as it will not affect test results. No specific toxicity has been reported in case of overdose, but symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth may occur, and appropriate treatment should be provided based on symptoms. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.
