This medication is used for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, as well as those with mixed hyperlipidemia. It helps to lower blood cholesterol and lipid levels as an adjunct when dietary and exercise modifications are insufficient. By improving vascular health, it contributes to reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, it is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy for effective management of blood lipid levels.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

This medication can be taken at any time during the day, with or without meals. The initial dose is 2.5 or 5 milligrams once daily, which can be adjusted to the maintenance dose as needed. The maintenance dose is generally 10 milligrams once daily, with most patients responding to this dose. The maintenance dose should be adjusted appropriately based on LDL cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response at intervals of 4 weeks or more, and can be increased up to a maximum of 20 milligrams per day.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For instance, those who are allergic to this medication or have severe liver impairment, muscle disorders, those taking certain immunosuppressants, and those with severe kidney dysfunction should not take this medication. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as women of childbearing age who are not using effective contraception, should also avoid this medication. Women who may become pregnant must consult a physician before taking this medication. Those at high risk of muscle disorders, such as individuals with moderately or severely reduced kidney function, hypothyroidism, family history of muscle disorders, alcohol dependence, or those taking certain medications should be particularly careful with dose adjustments or usage of this medication. This medication contains lactose; therefore, individuals with lactose intolerance or specific hereditary metabolic disorders should not take it. Patients with a history of liver disease or those who consume alcohol excessively should have liver function tests before starting this medication and should have regular checks during treatment. This medication can cause muscle pain, myopathy, and very rarely, severe muscle breakdown known as rhabdomyolysis; therefore, if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness, cramps, etc., occur, the physician should be notified immediately. Particularly in elderly patients, those with kidney diseases, hypothyroidism, alcohol abusers, and those taking certain medications, there is a higher risk of muscle-related side effects, so caution is necessary. This medication may increase blood concentrations and the risk of side effects when used with certain drugs, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should not take this medication, and women planning to become pregnant should consult before taking it. In case of overdose, as there is no specific antidote, treatment according to symptoms and liver and muscle function testing is required. Dizziness may occur while taking this medication, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery.

Allergic reactions including urticaria and angioedema, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, severe swelling (edema), severe rash with fever, blisters, peeling skin, pain of oral/ocular mucosa, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS), jaundice, hepatitis, severe liver damage, sudden and severe headache, seizures, confusion, visual disturbances, paralysis, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis.
