Precautions

This medication can cause serious lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia, so caution is required. Particularly, patients allergic to any component of this medication or those with type 1 diabetes, severe renal impairment, or liver dysfunction should not use it. Administration should be avoided in cases of dehydration, severe infections, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, or any condition that may affect kidney function. When taking this medication, caution is required when used in combination with other hypoglycemic agents to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia, and blood sugar levels should be monitored frequently. Lactic acidosis is rare but a very dangerous side effect; if symptoms such as abdominal pain, muscle pain, lethargy, or difficulty breathing occur, immediate medical attention should be sought. If kidney function is decreased, regular kidney function tests should be conducted and medication dosage adjusted accordingly. During surgery or radiological examinations, this medication should be temporarily discontinued and restarted after kidney function has recovered. Acute pancreatitis or vesicular skin diseases may occur; if severe abdominal pain or skin abnormalities arise during use, stop the medication immediately and consult a doctor. This medication should not be chewed, broken, or crushed but swallowed whole, and the tablet shell may appear in the stool, which is normal. Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, so if taken for a long time, it is advisable to regularly check blood vitamin B12 levels. It is preferable to avoid using this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding; patients planning to conceive should consult a physician. Elderly patients may have decreased kidney function, so dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests are necessary. There may be interactions with other medications, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform a physician or pharmacist. In cases of overdose, intervention may be required to remove the drug from the gastrointestinal tract or blood dialysis, so immediate medical attention is necessary. Finally, keep this medication out of the reach of children and store it in a dry place.
