This medication is used for the relief of symptoms and improvement of cognitive function in patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is to be taken orally once a day at the same time each day. It may be administered twice a day if necessary. 1. Adult dosage increase: - The maximum daily dose is 20mg. - The dose will be increased by 5mg each week for the first three weeks. - First week (days 1-7): administer 5mg daily - Second week (days 8-14): administer 10mg daily - Third week (days 15-21): administer 15mg daily - From the fourth week onwards, administer 20mg daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are hypersensitive to its ingredients or have severe liver or kidney impairment. It should be administered with caution to patients with epilepsy, those who have experienced seizures in the past, or those at high risk of epilepsy. Moreover, the use of this medication in conjunction with NMDA antagonists such as amantadine, ketamine, or dextromethorphan may increase the risk of side effects, so concurrent use is not recommended. Patients with factors that may raise urine pH, such as drastic dietary changes, excessive intake of alkaline beverages, or specific urinary tract infections should be closely monitored. As the safety of this medication has not been established in patients with a recent history of myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, or uncontrolled hypertension, caution is advised in such cases. Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, constipation, drowsiness, and hypertension, and if these symptoms become severe, one should consult a doctor. Central nervous system side effects such as mental confusion, hallucinations, and psychiatric reactions may also occur rarely, so monitoring is necessary. This medication can interact with other drugs, so when taken with NMDA antagonists, barbiturates, antipsychotic medications, skeletal muscle relaxants, anticoagulants, etc., it is essential to consult a doctor or pharmacist. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a doctor before taking this medication, and nursing mothers are advised to discontinue breastfeeding. Use in children or adolescents under the age of 18 is not recommended as safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, vomiting, and diarrhea may appear, necessitating immediate medical attention for appropriate treatment.
