Relief of pain in osteoarthritis of the knee and periprosthetic shoulder.
Used for typical joint diseases, including osteoarthritis of the knee and periprosthetic shoulder.
Administer 25mg of sodium hyaluronate intra-articularly once a week for 5 consecutive weeks into the knee joint or shoulder joint (shoulder joint cavity, subacromial bursa, or biceps tendon sheath), adjusting the frequency of administration as necessary based on symptoms. This medication is administered intra-articularly, so it must be done under strict aseptic conditions.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to patients with known allergies to this medication or its components, patients with skin diseases or infections in the joint area, patients with liver dysfunction or a history of liver disorders, and patients allergic to avian proteins. When using this medication, patients should be vigilant for side effects. Acute shock reactions may occur, so patients should be closely monitored after administration, and if any unusual symptoms arise, administration should be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment should be received. In addition, if facial swelling or hives, rashes, or itching occurs, administration should be suspended. Injection sites may experience temporary pain or swelling, and, rarely, blisters, redness, warmth, pressure pain, and bruising may occur, along with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fever, and headache. In cases of severe joint inflammation, this medication may exacerbate inflammation, so it is advisable to reduce inflammation before administering this medication. After administration, care should be taken to stabilize the joint area, and if the medication leaks outside the joint, pain may occur, thus it must be injected precisely into the joint. Care should be taken when administering this medication to patients with inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout, as inflammation may temporarily worsen. It is advisable to avoid vigorous exercises or activities placing weight on the joints, like jogging or tennis, for 48 hours post-administration. Safety and efficacy have not been confirmed when used in conjunction with other intra-articular injections, so it is safer not to combine them. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this medication cautiously as its safety is not well established; only use when the benefits outweigh the risks. Additionally, nursing mothers are advised to avoid breastfeeding during treatment as the medication may be excreted in breast milk. For pediatric patients, safety has not been sufficiently proven, so it should be used cautiously only when necessary. Elderly patients should also be closely monitored as they may have reduced physiological function. Aseptic conditions must be maintained during injection, and if symptoms do not improve, the number of injections should be limited to up to 5 and then discontinued. If excessive joint fluid is present, aspiration may be necessary. This medication should not be administered intravenously or for ophthalmic use, and caution should be taken due to its viscosity when considering the size of the injection needle. When using ampoules, the injection solution may stick to the top of the ampoule, so it is advisable to shake the ampoule to allow the solution to flow down before slowly drawing it into the syringe. When cutting the ampoule, clean the cutting area with alcohol cotton to prevent foreign substances from entering. Caution is advised when using with disinfectants such as benzalkonium chloride or chlorhexidine as precipitates may form. This medication is for single use only; any leftover after opening should be discarded quickly. Lastly, it is advisable to administer this medication after subcutaneously injecting a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine.
