Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to aid blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes, in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy, by utilizing both linagliptin and metformin. It effectively lowers blood sugar levels and helps manage diabetes.
This medication should be taken once daily with the evening meal. 5/1000 mg sustained release tablet: Take 1 tablet once daily. Patients taking 2.5/1000 mg sustained release tablets should take 2 tablets simultaneously once daily. Initial dosage is a total daily amount of 5 mg of linagliptin and 1000 mg of metformin hydrochloride, and metformin may be gradually increased up to the maximum recommended daily dosage of 2000 mg.
This medication is used to control blood sugar levels and contains two active ingredients. While taking this medication, there is a rare chance that a serious condition known as lactic acidosis may occur, requiring immediate treatment. Patients with severely impaired kidney function or acute kidney dysfunction should not use this medication. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or diabetic precoma. It is also safe to avoid this medication during acute illnesses such as severe infections, shock, or acute myocardial infarction. Patients with liver dysfunction or severe gastrointestinal disorders, as well as those in acute alcohol intoxication, should also avoid this medication. Pregnant women or those with placenta-related issues should also refrain from using this medication. When using this medication in combination with other blood sugar-lowering agents, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is advised, particularly if used with sulfonylureas or insulin, which may require dose adjustments. Gastrointestinal disturbances, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or loss of appetite may occur while taking this medication; if symptoms are severe, consult a doctor. Rare side effects like acute pancreatitis or erythema multiforme may occur; if such symptoms appear, stop taking the medication immediately and visit a hospital. Long-term use may cause decreased vitamin B12 levels, necessitating regular blood tests. This medication should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed; the shell of the tablet may be excreted in the stool, which is normal. Patients with impaired kidney function or the elderly should particularly have their kidney function checked regularly and adjust doses as necessary. If iodinated contrast agents are used for radiological examinations, this medication should be temporarily discontinued before and after the examination, and kidney function should be assessed before resuming use. Patients undergoing surgery should discontinue this medication 48 hours before surgery and resume after kidney function has recovered post-surgery. The risk of lactic acidosis increases with alcohol consumption, so avoid drinking alcohol. When taking this medication in conjunction with other drugs, there may be interactions, so inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about all medications being taken. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using this medication, and those planning to become pregnant should consult a healthcare provider. Safety for use in children has not been established, so it should not be used in pediatric patients. Data on the effects on driving or operating machinery is lacking; caution is advised. In the case of overdose, the medication may not be completely absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, but serious lactic acidosis can occur, necessitating immediate hospital visit. Store this medication out of reach of children, away from moisture, and do not transfer to other containers.
