Precautions

This medication is used to help control blood sugar in patients with diabetes. However, during use, there is a risk of rare complications such as severe lactic acidosis that require attention. Additionally, when taken with insulin or other antidiabetic medications, hypoglycemia may occur, so symptoms should be closely observed. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or acute kidney injury. Caution is also advised in conditions such as acute infections, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, or sepsis. It is also safest for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding mothers, to avoid using this medication. During treatment, regular kidney function tests and careful observation of fluid status are necessary. If dehydration symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting occur, immediate consultation with a doctor is required. Urinary or genital infections may occur, and prompt treatment should be sought if symptoms arise. This medication may lower vitamin B12 levels, necessitating regular blood tests. If surgery or tests using iodinated contrast agents are to be performed, this medication should be discontinued for a certain period, and treatment can be restarted only after confirming normal kidney function. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so caution should be exercised to avoid excessive drinking during therapy. Elderly patients or those at risk for fluid loss should be managed more carefully while using this medication. Any symptoms of hypoglycemia, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis that occur during treatment should be immediately reported to healthcare providers. Finally, its safety and efficacy have not been established in children, so its use is not recommended.
