Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This drug is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. In particular, it helps with blood sugar management by combining empagliflozin and metformin. Caution is necessary for patients with cardiovascular disease among those whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled, and professional guidance should be sought. This drug is designed to have a positive impact on cardiovascular health alongside effective blood sugar control.
The recommended dose of this medication is 1 tablet, twice a day. The dose should be determined based on each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability, not exceeding a total of 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. If a patient is unable to achieve adequate blood glucose control with metformin alone or in combination with other medications such as insulin, the recommended dose is 5 mg of empagliflozin.
This drug can cause a rare but serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, so caution is required during use. When used with other diabetes medications, hypoglycemia can occur, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute kidney issues, severe infections, or rapidly deteriorating heart function should not use this drug. Pregnant or breastfeeding women must not take this drug. This medication should be temporarily discontinued before and after tests using iodine contrast agents, and can be resumed once renal function has returned to normal. Patients scheduled for surgery, particularly those requiring general anesthesia, should discontinue this drug 48 hours prior to the procedure and can resume once normal renal function is confirmed post-surgery. Patients at risk of fluid loss, the elderly, or those showing signs of dehydration should monitor their hydration status and blood pressure closely during use. During treatment with this drug, regular monitoring of blood sugar control is essential, and immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary if symptoms of hypoglycemia or infection appear. Additionally, this drug may lower vitamin B12 levels, so it is advisable to check nutritional status with regular blood tests. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of side effects from this drug, so excessive drinking should be avoided during treatment. Caution may be needed when driving or operating machinery while taking this medication, depending on symptoms. This drug is not recommended for children under 18, and dosage adjustments may be necessary for the elderly based on renal function. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention is required, and prompt treatment is especially necessary if lactic acidosis symptoms are suspected. Lastly, keep this drug out of reach of children and store it in its original container to maintain quality.
