Therefore, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet once, twice daily. Each patient's current therapy, efficacy, and tolerability must be considered, ensuring that the maximum daily recommended dosage of empagliflozin 25 mg and metformin 2000 mg is not exceeded. For patients not achieving sufficient control with metformin alone or in combination with drugs like insulin, the recommended dosage is empagliflozin 5 mg twice daily and metformin.

Precautions

This medication helps control blood sugar levels. However, it may cause a rare side effect called lactic acidosis. Therefore, it should not be used in patients with poor kidney function or in cases of severe infection or dehydration. Additionally, caution is needed when used alongside other diabetes medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas, as hypoglycemia may occur. Kidney function should be regularly tested, and if kidney function deteriorates, this medication should be discontinued. This medication should also be temporarily stopped before and after surgeries or tests that involve iodine contrast agents. It is safer not to use this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding. During treatment, patients should be cautious of dehydration or fluid loss, and if symptoms such as severe vomiting or diarrhea occur, consult a doctor. There may be symptoms of genital infections or urinary tract infections, so report any unusual symptoms immediately. Since vitamin B12 levels may decrease, regular blood tests should be performed if necessary. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects, so excessive drinking should be avoided during treatment. Moreover, dosage adjustment and caution are necessary for elderly patients or those with weakened kidney function. Patients should closely monitor for symptoms of hypoglycemia, lactic acidosis, and ketoacidosis, and report any abnormalities to healthcare personnel immediately. Finally, this medication is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18 years of age.
