Blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adult patients with type 2 diabetes who are appropriate for the combined use of empagliflozin and metformin. It is particularly effective for those adult patients with type 2 diabetes who have inadequate blood sugar control and can also be applied to patients with cardiovascular disease. However, caution is needed with the occurrence of cardiovascular events, referring to clinical trial information from specialists. This medication effectively controls blood sugar to support diabetes management.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet taken twice a day. The dosage should be determined within the maximum recommended daily doses of empagliflozin 25 mg and metformin 2000 mg for each component. For patients with inadequate blood sugar control, they should take empagliflozin 5 mg twice daily (total daily dose of 10 mg) along with their existing metformin dosage. If the tolerance is excellent and additional blood sugar control is needed, empagliflozin can be increased.
This medication may cause serious side effects, such as severe lactic acidosis, and patients must notify their physician immediately if symptoms occur. Additionally, it may increase the risk of hypoglycemia if used with insulin or sulfonylureas, so caution is advised. It should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or certain acute illnesses. Treatment should be discontinued for a period before and after surgery or radiographic contrast tests, and can only be resumed after renal function has normalized. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. This medication may increase the risk of urinary tract infections and genital infections, so immediate treatment is necessary if infection symptoms occur. Patients with signs of fluid volume loss or dehydration must exercise caution when taking this medication, and especially the elderly should regularly monitor their renal function. Regular blood tests are recommended as vitamin B12 deficiency can occur. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it should be avoided. Because there is a risk of hypoglycemia, meals should be taken regularly, and dosage adjustments may be necessary when used with other hypoglycemic agents. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery while taking this medication, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. This medication is not recommended for children, and dosage adjustments and monitoring of renal function are important for the elderly. In cases of overdose, immediate medical attention is required, and dialysis may be beneficial. This medication should be stored in its original container and kept out of reach of children.
