Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication contains both empagliflozin and metformin, which helps adult patients with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar effectively alongside diet and exercise. It is particularly suitable for patients who have difficulty with blood sugar control and should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease after consulting a healthcare professional. It improves blood sugar control and aids overall diabetes management.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet, twice a day. The maximum recommended daily dose for each ingredient should not exceed 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. For patients who are not achieving sufficient blood sugar control with metformin alone or in combination with other medications such as insulin, empagliflozin 5 mg may be taken twice a day (total daily dose 10 mg) along with the current dose of metformin.
This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and works by controlling blood sugar with two active ingredients. When taking this medication, kidney function is extremely important, so it should not be used in patients with reduced kidney function or acute kidney problems. It should not be administered in cases of severe infection, dehydration, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, and administration should be temporarily suspended around surgical procedures. It is safer for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid this medication. This medication may cause hypoglycemia, so when used with insulin or other antidiabetic agents, caution is especially necessary, and immediate action should be taken if hypoglycemic symptoms occur. Additionally, it can cause a rare but severe side effect known as lactic acidosis; if symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle pain, or difficulty breathing appear, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary. During treatment, urinary infections or genital infections may occur, so any signs of infection should be treated promptly. Regular monitoring of kidney function, blood sugar, and vitamin B12 levels is important during use to ensure there are no abnormalities. Patients at high risk for fluid loss, for example, those experiencing severe diarrhea or vomiting, may temporarily discontinue this medication. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided while taking this medication. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is critical to inform the doctor or pharmacist of any other medications being taken. Elderly patients or those with diminished kidney function may require dosage adjustments, and regular testing is important. In case of overdose, hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis may occur; therefore, seek appropriate medical treatment immediately. Finally, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container safely.
