Effect on blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. In particular, this drug enhances blood sugar control through the combined administration of empagliflozin and metformin. Additionally, it can be administered in accordance with professional precautions for adults with type 2 diabetes who do not achieve adequate blood sugar control and have cardiovascular disease. Therefore, this medication effectively improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The recommended dose of this medication is 1 tablet once a day, taken twice a day. The dosage should not exceed the maximal recommended daily limit of empagliflozin 25 mg and metformin 2000 mg. For patients receiving metformin alone or in combination with other medications, the recommended dose is empagliflozin 5 mg twice daily and the existing dose of metformin. If tolerability is good, the dose of empagliflozin may be increased to 25 mg. The medication is used alongside sulfonylureas or insulin.
This medication can cause a rare but serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, and if symptoms such as malaise, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, weakness, or abdominal pain occur, a doctor must be notified immediately. Hypoglycemia may occur when this medication is used with insulin or sulfonylurea, so attention must be paid to symptoms of low blood sugar, and insulin dosage should be adjusted if necessary. This drug should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or in situations where acute renal function deterioration is anticipated. If there are acute conditions affecting renal function, such as dehydration, severe infections, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction, the use of this medication should be discontinued, and it should be restarted only after improvement of the condition. Before and after examinations using iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued due to the risk of renal injury and lactic acidosis, and it should be resumed only after renal function is confirmed to be normal. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant and nursing mothers should not use this medication, and insulin therapy is recommended for blood sugar control during pregnancy. Elderly patients aged 75 and older should be cautious of the risk of fluid loss when taking this medication and should regularly monitor their renal function. During treatment, urinary tract infections and genital infections may occur, so if infection symptoms appear, medical consultation should be sought immediately. Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, so for long-term use, it is advisable to regularly check vitamin B12 levels through blood tests. Alcohol consumption or excessive intake may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so alcohol should be avoided during treatment with this medication. Patients scheduled for surgery or recovering from surgery should discontinue this medication 48 hours before the procedure and resume it only after confirming normal renal function. Caution should be taken regarding symptoms of hypoglycemia, ensuring regular meals and thorough blood sugar management after vigorous exercise. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children, and it is not recommended for individuals under 18 years of age. In case of overdose, serious side effects like lactic acidosis may occur, so the dosage must be strictly adhered to, and immediate medical attention is required in case of overdose. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and it should be kept in its original container to maintain quality.
