How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet at a time, twice a day. The dosage should be determined according to each patient's condition, not exceeding 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. If blood glucose control is insufficient, it is recommended to take 5 mg of empagliflozin twice daily along with the existing dose of metformin, and if tolerance is excellent, the dosage of empagliflozin may be increased from 10 mg to 25 mg.

Precautions

This medication can cause a rare but severe metabolic complication known as lactic acidosis, so it should not be administered to patients with poor kidney function or liver disease. When used in combination with other diabetes medications, hypoglycemia may occur, so blood glucose levels should be closely monitored. Patients with moderate or less impaired kidney function or suspected acute kidney injury should avoid using this medicine. In situations where the physical condition worsens rapidly, such as acute infection, heart failure, myocardial infarction, or shock, it may be necessary to temporarily discontinue the medication. Before and after receiving iodine contrast for examinations, this medication should be stopped to reduce the risk of kidney damage and lactic acidosis, and should be resumed only after verifying kidney function. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. Elderly patients are at higher risk for kidney function decline and fluid loss, so regular kidney function tests and monitoring of fluid status are necessary, and dosage adjustments may be required. This medication may increase the risk of urinary tract infections and genital infections, so immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary if symptoms of infection occur. During treatment, attention should be paid to symptoms of hypoglycemia, especially if used in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas, as the risk of hypoglycemia is increased. This drug can lower vitamin B12 levels, so regular blood tests are required during long-term use. In case of overdose, serious side effects such as lactic acidosis may occur, so immediate medical attention is necessary upon any abnormal symptoms. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so it should be avoided during treatment. This medication may cause fluid loss, so caution is needed in the presence of dehydration, diarrhea, or vomiting, and it may be temporarily discontinued if necessary. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop this medication 48 hours prior to the procedure and resume it only after confirming normal kidney function.
