Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to improve blood glucose control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes when used in conjunction with diet and exercise. It is particularly suitable for patients with type 2 diabetes who do not achieve sufficient blood glucose control, and consultation with a specialist is necessary if there is a history of cardiovascular disease. This medication helps improve the health status of patients by effectively managing blood glucose levels.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet taken twice daily. The dosage should be determined based on each patient's current treatment regimen, effectiveness, and tolerance, ensuring it does not exceed the daily maximum recommended dosages of empagliflozin 25 mg and metformin 2000 mg. Patients who cannot achieve sufficient blood glucose control with metformin monotherapy or in combination with other medications such as insulin are recommended to take empagliflozin 5 mg.
This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It should not be used in patients with impaired kidney function or severe kidney disease. Administration should be discontinued in conditions such as acute infections, dehydration, decreased cardiac function, or acute myocardial infarction, and treatment should be paused for a certain period before and after surgery. It is safest not to use this medication in pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women. When used in conjunction with other medications that lower blood glucose, there may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. Rarely, a serious side effect called lactic acidosis may occur, characterized by excessive buildup of lactic acid in the body, with symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, breathing difficulties, lethargy, etc. Additionally, this medication may increase the risk of urinary or genital infections, and immediate consultation with a doctor is required if infection symptoms arise. Long-term use may lower vitamin B12 levels; regular blood tests are recommended to monitor this. This medication may cause dehydration or low blood pressure, so patients, especially the elderly or those at risk of fluid loss, should exercise caution. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided while on this medication. Adequate hydration is important, and patients should be cautious of potential hypoglycemia during irregular meals or vigorous exercise. Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood glucose levels is necessary during the period of medication use. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypoglycemia, increased urination, itching, skin rashes, etc. If any abnormal symptoms occur, medical personnel should be notified immediately. This medication is not recommended for children, and dosage adjustments and kidney function monitoring are needed for the elderly. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought, and blood dialysis may be necessary.
