Effect on blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to assist dietary and exercise regimens for blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. In particular, it effectively improves blood sugar levels by combining empagliflozin and metformin. It can also be applicable for adult type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular disease who are not achieving adequate blood sugar control; in this case, it is important to refer to professional guidelines and clinical study information. This treatment helps improve blood sugar management and supports maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet for each dose, taken twice a day. For patients who cannot achieve sufficient blood sugar control with monotherapy of metformin or other agents such as insulin, the recommended regimen includes empagliflozin 5 mg taken twice daily (total 10 mg) alongside the existing metformin dose. If the patient has good tolerance to empagliflozin 10 mg (total daily dose) and further blood sugar control is required, the dose can be increased to empagliflozin 25 mg (total daily dose).
This medication is intended to help lower blood sugar levels. However, there is a risk of a rare side effect called severe lactic acidosis, which requires caution. Lactic acidosis can lead to serious conditions due to the accumulation of lactic acid in the body and can sometimes be life-threatening. Additionally, caution is necessary as there is a risk of hypoglycemia when taken in conjunction with insulin or other diabetes medications. Patients with poor renal function or those experiencing acute infection, dehydration, or heart problems should not take this medication. Usage is prohibited, especially in cases of acute myocardial infarction, shock, and sepsis. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop taking this medication 48 hours before the surgery and should not resume until renal function is confirmed to be normal afterwards. It is also safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid using this medication. Regular renal function tests should be conducted during the use of this medication, and extra caution is required if there is fluid loss. Furthermore, this medication can increase the risk of urinary tract infections or genital infections, so immediate consultation with a doctor is needed if symptoms of infection occur. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur during use, and any severe symptoms should be reported to a doctor. This medication can lower vitamin B12 levels, so blood tests should be conducted if taken over a long period. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, hence it is advisable to avoid alcohol while on this medication. The effects on driving or operating machinery are not clearly established, so caution is necessary. In cases of overdose, immediate medical attention is required, particularly if lactic acidosis symptoms are suspected. This medication is not recommended for children, and elderly patients should take it while closely monitoring renal function. During the use of this medication, regular health check-ups and adherence to doctor's instructions are crucial.
