Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medicine is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes taking sitagliptin and metformin together. It is particularly effective for individuals who are also following dietary and exercise regimens. It contributes to preventing complications of diabetes by stabilizing blood sugar levels. This medicine helps you achieve better blood sugar management and maintain a healthy life.
This medicine is generally taken twice a day with food, and to reduce gastrointestinal side effects caused by metformin, the dosage should be gradually increased. The initial dose varies according to the patient's current treatment regimen, and patients not previously treated with metformin should start this medicine at 50/500 mg, taking 1 tablet twice daily, and may escalate to 50/1000 mg if necessary.
This medicine contains two components, each used for treating diabetes. The first component helps control blood sugar but can occasionally cause serious allergic reactions. These reactions may occur within the first 3 months of taking the medication, so if any allergy symptoms are suspected, stop taking the medicine immediately and consult a physician. Additionally, this medicine can induce inflammation of the pancreas known as acute pancreatitis; therefore, you should inform healthcare professionals immediately if you experience symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. The second component can be risky for patients with decreased kidney function and can lead to a serious metabolic disorder known as severe lactic acidosis, so kidney function should be routinely checked. This medicine should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment, acute heart failure, severe infections, or acute myocardial infarction. Before and after tests using radiological iodine contrast agents, the intake of this medicine should be temporarily discontinued and resumed only after confirming normal kidney function. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and children under 18 years of age should not use this medicine. While taking this medicine, pay attention to symptoms of hypoglycemia, especially when used in conjunction with other blood sugar-lowering agents, as the risk of hypoglycemia may increase. Moreover, alcohol consumption can elevate the risk of lactic acidosis, so drinking should be avoided during treatment. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop taking this medicine 48 hours prior to the procedure and resume only after oral intake normalizes and kidney function is verified. Gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain may occur, so consult a doctor if symptoms are severe. Regular blood tests and kidney function tests should be conducted, and since vitamin B12 levels may decrease, supplementation may be necessary. If sudden respiratory distress, hives, severe skin rash, joint pain, or blistering skin lesions occur while taking this medicine, inform healthcare professionals immediately. Finally, this medicine may interact with other medications, so if you are taking other drugs, be sure to inform your healthcare provider.
Hives, severe swelling (angioedema), anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis), acute pancreatitis, acute kidney failure, respiratory distress, unstable angina, severe hypoglycemia, severe and debilitating joint pain, blistering dermatitis, liver abnormalities (elevated liver enzyme levels), severe edema, cold sweat, pallor, abdominal pain (potentially associated with acute pancreatitis), headache (possibly serious neurological symptoms), loss of consciousness
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
Store this medicine in a tightly closed container to prevent contact with air, and it is recommended to keep it at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. Doing so helps maintain the medicine's efficacy and prevents deterioration.
