Effect on blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, along with dietary and exercise therapy. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications and is particularly beneficial for patients whose blood sugar is not well controlled. It is also indicated for patients with cardiovascular diseases and risk factors. This medication plays an important role in diabetes management by improving blood sugar levels. Overall, it is effectively used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 10mg once daily for monotherapy and additional combination therapy. In initial combination therapy with metformin, the dosage is 5mg or 10mg once daily. There are dosage adjustment guidelines based on renal impairment, liver impairment, and elderly status, but the basic dosage remains the same. This medication can be taken orally once daily at any time, regardless of food intake, and should be swallowed whole.
The efficacy and safety in children under 18 years have not been established. Therefore, there is no recommended dosage.
This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to its active ingredients or excipients. Do not administer this medication to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. This medication contains lactose and should not be used in patients with genetic problems such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. This medication should not be administered to patients undergoing dialysis. Caution is required when using this medication in patients with reduced fluid volume or impaired renal function. This medication can cause a decrease in blood pressure or intravascular blood volume, and caution is especially needed in elderly patients with impaired renal function or those taking diuretics. Fluid volume and renal function should be evaluated before administration, and symptoms of hypotension and renal function should be continuously monitored after administration. In patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, the blood sugar control effect of this medication may be reduced, so caution is necessary. When using this medication, symptoms like genital infections, urinary tract infections, hypoglycemia, decreased fluid volume, and diabetic ketoacidosis may occur, so symptoms should be monitored carefully. Genital infections may be more common in women and patients with a history of such conditions. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when used in conjunction with blood glucose-lowering agents like insulin or sulfonylureas, necessitating dosage adjustments. This medication may induce dehydration or hypotension due to decreased fluid volume; therefore, patients with unstable fluid status should consider discontinuation of treatment. Diabetic ketoacidosis may occur even if blood sugar levels are not high, so immediate examination and treatment are required when related symptoms are present. Severe urinary infections such as urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis have also been reported, so prompt treatment is needed if infection symptoms appear. In case of severe infection symptoms like necrotizing fasciitis, administration of the medication should be immediately stopped and appropriate treatment should be sought. Elderly patients should be managed more carefully due to the higher risk of renal function decline and decreased fluid volume. Pregnant women should not use this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed, treatment should be discontinued immediately. Breastfeeding women are also advised against using this medication. Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents have not been adequately established, so there is no dosage for these age groups. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; appropriate treatment should be administered according to symptoms, and there is no research on whether this medication can be removed by dialysis. This medication does not significantly affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, but caution is required when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas due to the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication should be stored in its original container and kept out of the reach of children.
