Treatment of obesity (weight loss and maintenance); prevention of weight regain
This medication is used to assist patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 kg/m² or higher who also have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia, in losing or maintaining weight when combined with a low-calorie diet. It is also effective in reducing the risk of weight regain. This helps in maintaining a healthy weight and contributes to overall obesity treatment.
○ Adults The recommended dose of this medicine is 120mg of orlistat orally 3 times daily, taken with a fat-containing meal or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue a nutritionally balanced, mildly hypocaloric diet in which approximately 30% of calories are derived from fat. Daily intake of fat, carbohydrate, and protein should be distributed evenly across three meals. This medicine may be omitted if a meal is skipped or contains no fat. Because this medicine may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrition. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before this medicine or at least 2 hours after it, such as at bedtime. Taking more than 120mg of this medicine 3 times daily does not increase its efficacy. Based on measurements of fecal fat, the effect of this medicine appears 24 ∼ 48 hours after taking the medication. After treatment is discontinued, fecal fat content generally returns to pretreatment levels within 48 ∼ 72 hours. The efficacy and safety of this medicine have not been evaluated for periods exceeding 4 years. Studies have not been conducted in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment or in older adults.
Studies have not been conducted in children under 12 years of age.
This medication should not be used in patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or those with biliary secretion cessation. Individuals who are allergic to this medication or any of its components should also avoid it. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Those with a genetic condition that affects the digestion of lactose should avoid this medication. Patients with liver damage may experience impaired liver function while taking this medication, and regular liver function tests are necessary. Patients with urinary stones or high oxalate excretion should be cautious while taking this medication. This medication contains certain dyes, and individuals who are allergic to these components should use it with caution. Side effects primarily occur in the digestive system during treatment, with changes in bowel habits or abdominal bloating, fatty stools, etc., being common. Most side effects are mild and temporary, however, hepatitis or severe liver damage has been reported in rare cases; therefore, if liver health issues arise, consult a doctor immediately. This medication can interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, so it is advisable to take vitamin supplements together. Taking this medication with high-fat meals may exacerbate gastrointestinal side effects, so it is important to manage fat intake. This medication can interact with certain drugs, so patients taking other medications should consult a doctor or pharmacist. Caution is especially needed when used together with anticoagulants, immunosuppressants, or anticonvulsants. Women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid taking this medication as it can affect the fetus or baby. Its safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 12 years. Serious side effects are rare in overdose cases, but medical observation is necessary in such situations. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept away from light and moisture.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication must be protected from air, light, and moisture by being stored in a sealed container. Additionally, it should be kept in a cool place below 25 degrees Celsius to maintain its efficacy.
