Precautions

This medication contains two ingredients, sitagliptin and metformin. First, sitagliptin can cause a rare but severe allergic reaction, so if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur within 3 months of administration, the medication should be discontinued immediately and a doctor should be consulted. Moreover, sitagliptin can cause a serious side effect known as acute pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas. If symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite occur, notify healthcare personnel promptly. Metformin can cause a rare but fatal metabolic disorder called lactic acidosis, and this medication should not be taken if there is impaired kidney function, liver disease, dehydration, or severe infection. Also, if there is sudden dehydration, severe diarrhea, or vomiting, the medication should be stopped and a doctor consulted. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, and regular kidney function tests should be conducted. Special caution is necessary for elderly patients or those with weakened kidney function. Alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, and the medication should be temporarily stopped around the time of sudden surgery or radiologic investigations involving contrast agents. Additionally, because there is a risk of hypoglycemia, meals should be eaten regularly, and when taken together with other hypoglycemic agents or insulin, care should be taken for signs of hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include dizziness, cold sweat, tremor, and fatigue, and if they occur, take sugar immediately and consult healthcare personnel. This medication is not to be administered to pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, as well as to nursing mothers. Finally, any unusual skin rashes, severe joint pain, or blisters around the mouth while taking this medication should be reported to a doctor immediately. During the course of this medication, it is important to regularly check blood sugar levels, kidney function, liver function, and vitamin B12 levels and consult healthcare personnel quickly if any discomfort occurs.
