Precautions

This drug is used to treat diabetes and helps to control blood sugar. However, it may very rarely cause a dangerous condition known as lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. Additionally, when used in conjunction with insulin or other diabetes medications, hypoglycemia may occur. This drug should not be used in patients with severely impaired kidney function, or those with acute illnesses such as dehydration or serious infections. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid this medication. Before taking this drug, it is crucial to check fluid status and kidney function, and symptoms of hypotension or changes in kidney function should be monitored closely during treatment. In particular, dosage should be adjusted carefully for elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function. This drug may increase the risk of genital infections and urinary tract infections; hence, any signs of infection should prompt immediate consultation with a physician. Furthermore, this drug may lower vitamin B12 levels, so regular monitoring of vitamin B12 is advisable during prolonged use. Excessive alcohol consumption increases risks, so alcohol should be avoided during treatment. Before and after surgical or radiological contrast examinations, discontinuation of this drug for a period is needed, followed by checking kidney function before resuming it. While taking this drug, patients should monitor for symptoms of hypoglycemia and dehydration, and report any abnormal signs to healthcare providers immediately. Lastly, safety has not been established in children and pregnant women, and careful management is necessary for the elderly.
