Effectiveness in blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to effectively improve blood glucose control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes in conjunction with dietary and exercise regimens through the co-administration of dapagliflozin and metformin. It should be used with caution in patients at risk of cardiovascular events, particularly in those whose blood glucose is not adequately controlled.
This medication is generally administered once daily with the evening meal. The maximum dosage is 10 mg of dapagliflozin and 2000 mg of sustained-release metformin once daily. Dosage should be individualized based on the patient’s treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability to not exceed the maximum recommended dosage. The recommended starting dose during initial therapy is 1 tablet of 5 mg/500 mg or 10 mg/500 mg once daily. The tablet should be swallowed whole.
This medication is used to treat diabetes and helps control blood glucose levels. Caution is advised as it may pose risks for patients with decreased kidney function or acute kidney injury. This medication should not be administered to patients with severe infections, dehydration, cardiovascular issues, or liver dysfunction. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid using this medication. When used with other diabetes treatments, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, hence dose adjustments may be required when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. Rare side effects such as lactic acidosis can occur during use, so if symptoms such as fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or abdominal discomfort appear, immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication may increase the risk of genital and urinary infections, so prompt treatment is necessary if infection symptoms develop. During the course of this medication, there may be a risk of decreased fluid volume or hypotension, so it is important to regularly monitor for dehydration symptoms or changes in blood pressure. Elderly patients or those with renal impairment should have adjusted dosages and regular kidney function tests are necessary. Before undergoing surgery or radiologic examinations with contrast media, this medication should be temporarily discontinued, and use should resume only after kidney function is confirmed to be normal post-examination. In the case of overdose, appropriate symptomatic treatment is necessary, and for the metformin component, dialysis may be helpful. This medication does not significantly affect the ability to drive or operate machinery; however, caution is necessary as dizziness may occur. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of the reach of children and must be kept in its original container to prevent degradation of quality.
