Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and has the effect of lowering blood sugar levels. However, it should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, heart failure, acute heart disease, or severe infections. It is essential to discontinue this medication for at least 48 hours before any tests using radiological contrast agents, and verify normal kidney function before resuming use. It is safe for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant not to take this medication. Caution is needed when this medication is used in combination with other diabetic medications, as hypoglycemia may occur. The risk of hypoglycemia increases particularly if meals are skipped or irregular, or after intense physical exercise. Patients with a history of abdominal surgery or bowel obstruction should also be administered with caution. There is a risk of arrhythmia when taken with medications that may affect cardiac rhythm. During treatment, liver and kidney functions should be regularly monitored for any abnormal signs. Rare side effects such as lactic acidosis may occur, which is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention if symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, or lethargy are observed. Alcohol intake may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so it is preferable to avoid it. Regular blood tests are recommended as vitamin B12 levels may decrease. Nursing mothers should consult a doctor to determine whether to continue use as this medication may excrete into breast milk. In cases of overdose, immediate hospital treatment should be sought, and blood dialysis may be required. For children and the elderly, caution is necessary as safety and efficacy have not been thoroughly established and renal function may be impaired.
