Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and helps with blood sugar control. It is crucial to ensure that kidney function is normal before taking this medication. It should not be administered to patients with reduced kidney function, and it is especially contraindicated in cases of moderate to severe renal impairment. This medication can rarely cause a serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, so if symptoms such as difficulty breathing, muscle pain, weakness, or abdominal pain occur, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary. Additionally, when taken in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylurea medications, hypoglycemic symptoms may arise, therefore blood sugar levels should be monitored regularly, and attention should be paid to signs of hypoglycemia. Patients with liver impairment, severe heart failure, acute infections or trauma, or those scheduled for surgery should avoid or discontinue this medication. In particular, this medication should be discontinued for a certain period before and after examinations using radiological iodine contrast agents. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and it's also not recommended for nursing mothers. Regular blood tests and kidney function tests should be performed during medication use to check for abnormalities. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is advisable to avoid drinking while taking this medication. Rarely, side effects such as skin rashes, liver function abnormalities, pancreatitis, or interstitial pneumonia may occur, so any symptoms should be immediately discussed with a doctor. Older adults may have diminished kidney function, so dose adjustments and regular monitoring are necessary. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention is required, and treatment such as dialysis may be instituted if necessary. This medication has not been established for safety and efficacy in children, hence it should not be used in pediatric patients. When taking this medication, it is advisable to keep it out of reach of children and not to transfer it to other containers.
