Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to aid blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes by using Tenegliptin and Metformin together. It helps enhance blood sugar management as an adjunct for patients who are also implementing dietary control and exercise therapy.
This medication is generally administered once daily with the evening meal; the 20/1000 mg extended-release form is taken as 1 tablet once daily, while the 10/750 mg or 10/500 mg extended-release forms are taken as 2 tablets once daily. The initial dosage starts with Tenegliptin 20 mg once daily and the pre-existing dose of Metformin. The maximum recommended dosage per day is Tenegliptin 20 mg and extended-release Metformin 2000 mg.
This medication is used for treating diabetes and helps control blood sugar. However, there are several precautions to take when using this medication. First, it can rarely induce a condition called lactic acidosis, where lactic acid excessively accumulates in the body, leading to a dangerous state. This lactic acidosis is more likely to occur in patients with reduced kidney function, heart disease, severe infections, or dehydration. Therefore, patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, severe heart failure, liver dysfunction, or those who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use this medication. Additionally, patients receiving iodine contrast agents used in radiological examinations should discontinue this medication 48 hours prior to the examination and should restart it only after normal kidney function is confirmed. Caution is also advised when using this medication alongside insulin or other diabetes medications as it may result in hypoglycemia. If hypoglycemic symptoms occur, consume a sugary food immediately, and if symptoms are severe, consult medical personnel. This medication may occasionally cause side effects such as dyspepsia, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, abdominal pain, bloating, stomatitis, gastric polyps, colonic polyps, duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, decreased appetite, elevated amylase, elevated lipase, elevated AST (GOT), elevated ALT (GPT), elevated GGT, elevated ALP, proteinuria, ketonuria, potential hematuria, eczema, rash, itching, allergic dermatitis, arthralgia, elevated CK (CPK), and increased serum potassium levels. Especially, sudden abdominal pain, vomiting, or severe fatigue may signal acute pancreatitis or lactic acidosis and require immediate notification to medical personnel. Furthermore, long-term use of this medication can lower vitamin B12 levels, so regular blood tests are recommended. Elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function may need dosage adjustments and should have kidney function monitored regularly. Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is advisable to avoid drinking during treatment with this medication. Lastly, if blisters or skin rashes occur during the course of treatment, consult a physician immediately, and the use of this medication may need to be temporarily suspended during surgical procedures or severe infections.
Hives, severe swelling (edema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweats, paleness, severe rash with fever, blisters, skin peeling, pain in mouth/eye mucosa, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, cough with fever and respiratory abnormalities, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), extreme fatigue, sudden and severe headache, thunderclap headache, seizures, confusion, visual disturbances, paralysis, urination issues.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication may be sensitive to air or moisture, so it should be stored in a tightly sealed container. It is best to maintain a storage temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius to safely preserve the medication's efficacy.
