Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is developed to assist patients with type 2 diabetes in controlling blood sugar more effectively when used in conjunction with diet and exercise. Sitagliptin and metformin work together to help lower and stabilize blood glucose levels. Thus, this medication plays an auxiliary role in the treatment of type 2 diabetes where blood glucose control is challenging, leading to improved healthy blood sugar management.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily with dinner to reduce gastrointestinal adverse reactions due to metformin, gradually increasing the dosage. To maintain the extended-release properties, do not split, crush, chew, or divide the tablets; always swallow them whole. For the 100/1000 mg extended-release tablets, take 1 tablet once daily. For the 50/500 mg extended-release tablets or 50/1000 mg extended-release tablets.

Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin, and is used for diabetes treatment. The sitagliptin component may rarely cause severe allergic reactions; hence, if allergy symptoms or skin conditions occur, use must be discontinued immediately. Furthermore, if acute pancreatitis symptoms occur, the use of this medication should be discontinued, and a doctor consulted immediately. The metformin component can cause serious metabolic disorders such as lactic acidosis, so patients with impaired renal function or liver dysfunction should avoid using this medication. Additionally, it should not be administered in cases of dehydration, severe infections, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction, and should be temporarily halted around surgery. This medication is not considered safe for patients with reduced renal function, for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for children under 18 years old. While using this medication, blood sugar levels, renal function, liver function, and vitamin B12 levels should be regularly monitored, especially in the elderly, who need thorough monitoring of kidney function. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is used with other antidiabetic medications or insulin, so attention should be paid to hypoglycemic symptoms, and dosage adjustments of other medications may be necessary. Moreover, alcohol consumption may raise the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided during the treatment. When undergoing surgery or tests using iodine contrast agents, the administration of this medication should be temporarily suspended until renal function is confirmed to be normal before resuming. If sudden shortness of breath, muscle pain, weakness, abdominal pain, or other symptoms occur during the use of this medication, consult a doctor immediately. Finally, this medication may rarely cause side effects such as joint pain, skin rash, or blood abnormalities; therefore, if any unusual symptoms persist, inform healthcare providers.
