Precautions

This medication consists of two active ingredients, sitagliptin and metformin, and is primarily used for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. First, this medication can rarely cause severe allergic reactions; if allergic symptoms such as skin rash, breathing difficulties, etc. occur, discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor. Second, this medication can induce a serious side effect known as acute pancreatitis, characterized by inflammation of the pancreas, so if symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite occur, immediate medical attention should be sought. Third, the metformin component carries a risk of a rare and potentially life-threatening metabolic disorder called lactic acidosis; therefore, it should not be used in patients with poor kidney function, liver disease, severe infections, or dehydration. Fourth, patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, those with acute heart failure or myocardial infarction, and those undergoing specific tests using iodine contrast agents should not use this medication and must discontinue treatment for a period before and after testing. Fifth, it is safest not to use this medication in pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and children under the age of 18. Sixth, this medication may induce hypoglycemia; therefore, patients should carefully monitor blood sugar changes when skipping meals, eating irregularly, engaging in vigorous exercise, or using other hypoglycemic agents concurrently. Seventh, excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so it is advisable to avoid drinking while on it. Eighth, during treatment with this medication, regular monitoring of kidney function and blood tests, as well as checking vitamin B12 levels, is recommended. Ninth, if undergoing surgery, medication should be discontinued 48 hours prior to the procedure, and it should only be resumed after normal kidney function has been confirmed post-surgery. Lastly, this medication may interact with other drugs; if you are currently taking other medications, notify your healthcare provider, especially when using drugs that could affect kidney function.
