Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes by combining empagliflozin and metformin. It is effective for managing blood sugar, especially in type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular disease. For related clinical information, it is best to refer to professional materials. This medication helps improve blood sugar control.
The recommended dose of this medication is one tablet twice daily. The dosage should not exceed 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin per day and should be adjusted according to each patient's condition. If glycemic control is insufficient, start with 5 mg of empagliflozin taken twice daily (total 10 mg) alongside the existing dose of metformin. If well tolerated, the dose of empagliflozin can be increased to 25 mg (total).
This medication is used for diabetes treatment and contains two components that lower blood sugar. This medication can cause a rare but fatal side effect known as lactic acidosis, so patients with poor kidney function or severe infections, dehydration, or heart problems should not use it. Caution is necessary when taken with insulin or other diabetes medications as there is a risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, liver dysfunction, and pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication. Before and after surgery or examinations using iodine contrast agents, the use of this medication should be temporarily discontinued, and it should be resumed only after checking kidney function. This medication may increase the risk of urinary tract infections and genital infections, so if symptoms of infection appear, medical consultation should be sought immediately. Vitamin B12 levels may decrease, so it is advisable to regularly check vitamin B12 levels during prolonged use. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided while taking this medication. Elderly patients are at higher risk of fluid loss and decreased kidney function, necessitating regular monitoring of kidney function and fluid status. If symptoms such as sudden muscle pain, weakness, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting occur while taking this medication, inform a doctor immediately. Hypoglycemic symptoms may occur, so do not skip meals and take it regularly, and respond immediately if hypoglycemic symptoms are suspected. Furthermore, safety and effectiveness have not been established in children, and it is recommended that individuals under 18 do not take this medication. Lastly, this medication should be taken strictly according to a doctor's prescription and instructions, and it should not be stopped or the dose changed arbitrarily.
