Effects on blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used in combination with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adult patients with type 2 diabetes, for whom the combination of empagliflozin and metformin is appropriate. It can be taken by adults with type 2 diabetes who have not achieved adequate blood sugar control, especially if they have cardiovascular disease, but it is important to refer to expert guidelines for this. This medication effectively improves patients' blood sugar levels and assists in diabetes management.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet per dose, twice a day. The maximum recommended daily doses of each component should not exceed 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. In cases where adequate blood sugar control is not achieved with metformin alone or in combination with other medications like insulin, empagliflozin 5 mg can be taken twice daily (total 10 mg) along with the existing metformin dosage.
This medication can cause a rare side effect known as lactic acidosis, so it should not be used by individuals with impaired kidney function or liver issues. Additionally, caution is advised when taken with other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas, as hypoglycemic symptoms may occur. Patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment, acute renal issues, severe infections, or heart failure should not take this medication. If undergoing tests using iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be stopped for a certain period before and after the test, and resuming should only occur after confirming normal kidney function after the test. It is safest for pregnant women, those who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers not to use this medication. Elderly patients, those exhibiting dehydration symptoms, or at high risk for fluid loss should monitor their fluid status carefully when taking this medication and temporarily discontinue if necessary. This medication may increase the risk of urinary tract or genital infections, and immediate consultation with healthcare personnel is required if symptoms of infection arise. Long-term use may decrease vitamin B12 levels, so regular blood checks for vitamin B12 status are recommended if taking it for an extended time. In case of overdose, serious side effects like lactic acidosis may arise, so dosage should be adhered to strictly, and immediate hospital visit is required for any abnormal symptoms. Alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, and it is important to be aware of hypoglycemic symptoms and maintain regular meals. If surgery is planned, this medication should be discontinued 48 hours prior to the surgery and resumed only after confirming normal recovery of kidney function following surgery. This medication is not recommended for children under 18, and elderly patients should use the minimum effective dose while regularly checking kidney function. If pain, redness, or swelling occurs in the genital area or perineum during use, notify healthcare personnel immediately, as severe perineal necrosis can occur in rare cases. There is insufficient research regarding the effects on driving or operating machinery, so caution is required after taking this medication. During the use of this medication, regular checks on blood sugar and kidney function should be conducted, and any abnormal symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with healthcare personnel.
