Precautions

This medicine helps to control blood sugar levels. However, there's a risk of developing a rare side effect called severe lactic acidosis, so caution is needed. When taken with other hypoglycemic agents, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, which should be approached carefully. It should not be administered to patients with significantly impaired kidney function, acute kidney problems, heart failure, or diabetic ketoacidosis. It is necessary to temporarily suspend use of this medicine before and after using iodine contrast agents and to resume only after normal kidney function has been confirmed. It is safe not to use this medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Regular kidney function checks are required while taking this medicine, and immediate consultation with a doctor is needed if symptoms of dehydration or severe infections occur. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may appear, so especially when taking with insulin or sulfonylurea drugs, blood sugar levels should be monitored carefully. Urinary tract infections or genital infections may occur, so prompt treatment should be received if symptoms of infection appear. Vitamin B12 levels may decrease, so it is advisable to check vitamin B12 status during long-term use. Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medicine, thus it should be avoided. Elderly patients or those with weakened kidney function should take special care, and dose adjustment may be necessary. If surgery is planned, this medicine should be stopped 48 hours prior to surgery and resumed only after kidney function has returned to normal. An overdose may lead to severe side effects such as lactic acidosis, and immediate medical treatment is required. This medicine is not recommended for children, and when storing the medication, it should be kept out of reach of children.
