Precautions

This medication is used to lower blood sugar and is particularly helpful in diabetes treatment. It can cause a rare but fatal side effect known as severe lactic acidosis, thus should not be used in patients with impaired kidney function or certain diseases. Additionally, caution is needed when used alongside insulin or other diabetes medications as hypoglycemic symptoms may occur. Patients with impaired kidney function, acute infections or dehydration, and acute heart conditions should not take this medication as it can pose risks. During treatment with this medication, regular blood tests should be performed to monitor kidney function and blood sugar status, especially for the elderly or those with impaired kidney function. Side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbance, urinary tract infections, genital infections, increased urination, and hypoglycemia may occur; if symptoms are severe, consult a doctor. This medication should be temporarily discontinued before and after surgeries or procedures using radiocontrast agents until kidney function is restored. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and particularly women who may become pregnant should consult a doctor before use. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is advisable to avoid drinking while on this medication. When administering this medication to the elderly, kidney function should be closely monitored, and dose adjustments made as necessary. In case of overdose, serious issues such as lactic acidosis may occur, so it is important to take the prescribed dose as directed by a doctor. Lastly, keep this medication out of reach of children and store it in its original container to maintain quality.
