Blood sugar control and prevention of cardiovascular events in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in combination with empagliflozin and metformin to assist blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes during dietary and exercise therapy. It is particularly administered when blood sugar is not adequately controlled, and it can also be expected to be effective in patients with cardiovascular disease. However, for detailed information regarding the occurrence of cardiovascular events, reference should be made to clinical trial information for professionals. This medication helps improve blood sugar control.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet, taken twice daily. Empagliflozin should not exceed a maximum daily dose of 25 mg, and metformin should not exceed a maximum daily dose of 2000 mg, determined according to each patient's treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability. If blood sugar control is insufficient when taken alone or in combination with other medications, a daily dosage of 5 mg of empagliflozin should be administered twice daily. For those with good tolerability and needing additional blood sugar control
This medication can cause a rare but serious side effect known as severe lactic acidosis, so it should not be administered to patients at high risk for lactic acidosis. Additionally, caution should be exercised when used in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylurea medications, as hypoglycemia may occur. Patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, acute kidney problems, severe infections, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, and others should not use this medication. Before and after examinations using iodinated contrast agents, medication should be temporarily discontinued due to the risks of renal injury and lactic acidosis, and resumed only after renal function has returned to normal. It is recommended that pregnant or potentially pregnant women and nursing mothers do not use this medication. This medication is affected by renal function, therefore kidney function tests should be conducted regularly before and during administration. Patients at risk of fluid loss, for example, those with dehydration, diarrhea, or vomiting, should use this medication cautiously. If necessary, medication can be temporarily discontinued. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbance, hypoglycemia, urinary tract infections, genital infections, increased urination, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, constipation, abnormal liver function tests, hepatitis, altered taste, itching, rash, erythema, edema, dysuria, thirst, increased serum lipids, increased serum creatinine, elevated hematocrit, decreased vitamin B12 and deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, facial and peripheral edema, and cough. Particularly in elderly or frail patients, and those with poor nutritional status, caution is necessary due to the increased risk of hypoglycemia. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided while taking this medication. Patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue this medication 48 hours prior to surgery and resume only after renal function has been confirmed to be normal post-surgery. During treatment, blood sugar control status should be regularly monitored, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to a healthcare professional immediately. This medication is not recommended for children under the age of 18, and in patients over 75 years of age, care should be taken to monitor fluid loss and renal function.
